No. 4 Duke 69, No. 2 Virginia 63: Freshman Tyus Jones scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half, including the clinching 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds left, as the visiting Blue Devils scored the final 11 to hand the Cavaliers their first loss.
Freshman Justise Winslow recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds - his first double-double - while Quinn Cook scored 15 for Duke (18-3, 5-3 ACC), which avoided falling to .500 in the conference after eight games for the first time since the 1995-96 season. Blue Devils freshman Jahlil Okafor, a national player of the year candidate who entered the game averaging 18.7 and 9.4 rebounds, recorded 10 and nine while getting double-teamed virtually every time he touched the ball.
Malcolm Brogdon registered 17 points and six rebounds as Virginia (19-1, 7-1 ACC) had its 21-game home winning streak snapped. Justin Anderson added 11 points and five rebounds for the Cavaliers, who took a 63-58 lead on Anderson's dunk with three minutes remaining.
Duke led by as many as nine and registered 22 points in the paint en route to a 26-25 lead at halftime despite Okafor recording more turnovers (three) than field goal attempts and points (two). Brogdon recorded a pair of three-point plays in the first five minutes of the second half to help Virginia take a 41-30 lead before the Blue Devils unleashed a 13-4 run sparked by a 3-pointer by Jones - Duke's first from long range after missing nine - to get within 49-47 with 6:25 to go.
The Cavaliers scored the next seven points, including two free throws by Anderson after Winslow received a Flagrant 1 foul for grabbing Anderson's legs while the two were tangled on the floor. Quinn Cook delivered a pair of 3-pointers as the Blue Devils began their final comeback - the second giving Duke a 66-63 lead with 1:16 remaining - and after Mike Tobey (eight points, five rebounds) missed a free throw and pair of putback attempts, Jones put the final dagger into Virginia.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Duke played its first game without Rasheed Sulaimon, who became the first player in school history to be dismissed from the team Thursday, leaving the Blue Devils with eight scholarship players. ... Virginia also had its 21-game ACC home win streak snapped - the longest such run since Duke won 22 in a row from 2002-04. ... The Blue Devils recorded their third victory over a top 10 team on the road in a season for the first time in school history after already prevailing at No. 5 Wisconsin 80-70 on Dec. 3 and No. 9 Louisville 63-52 on Jan. 17. ... Kentucky (21-0) is the only remaining undefeated team in Division I.
