No. 8 Notre Dame 77, No. 4 Duke 73: Jerian Grant finished with 23 points, a career-high 12 assists, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks as the Fighting Irish rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat the visiting Blue Devils.
Pat Connaughton contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds for Notre Dame (20-2, 8-1 ACC), which overcame a double-digit deficit for the fifth time in six conference games to continue its best start since 1973-74. Zach Auguste poured in 14 points and Demetrius Jackson came on late to score 10 for the Irish.
Freshman Jahlil Okafor tallied 22 points and 17 boards for Duke (17-3, 4-3), which has dropped its last two meetings against Notre Dame. Quinn Cook added 15 points while Tyus Jones scored 14 and Justise Winslow provided 13 to round out the Blue Devils’ double-digit scorers.
Duke overcame a seven-point first-half deficit and survived an early second-half onslaught from Connaughton to build a 10-point edge when Jones capped a 12-2 run with a 3-pointer. Following a bucket from Okafor with just over 11 minutes left, Notre Dame rattled off the next 12 points – including five from Jackson – over the next 5 ½ minutes to take their first lead of the second half at 67-65 with 6 ½ minutes remaining.
Consecutive baskets from Okafor put the Blue Devils back in front before Grant tied it up with a high-arcing layup with 4:09 to go and hit an off-balance runner as the shot clock was winding down with 1:11 left to make it 73-70. Following a pair of free throws by Cook to close the gap to one, Grant found Steve Vasturia in the right corner for a 3-pointer before blocking Cook’s layup attempt on the other end to preserve the Irish’s four-point lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: This game marked only the third time in over 34 years that two top-10 teams squared off in South Bend, Ind., and first since Feb. 9, 2003. … Connaughton left the game midway through the second half when he flipped over Duke C Marshall Plumlee and fell on the back of his head. Connaughton went back to the locker room briefly, but returned to the court about three minutes later. … The Irish have won each of the last two meetings after the Blue Devils took 19 of the first 21.
