No. 6 Duke 77, St. John’s 68: Tyus Jones tied a career high for the second straight game with 22 points to power the Blue Devils past the Red Storm at Madison Square Garden as Mike Krzyzewski became the first men’s basketball coach to reach 1,000 wins.
Jones went 10-of-10 from the foul line and handed out six assists while fellow freshman Jahlil Okafor added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Duke (17-2), which won for the 18th time in its last 21 visits to the Garden. Quinn Cook drained four 3-pointers en route to 17 points while Amile Jefferson chipped in with 11.
Sir'Dominic Pointer finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks for St. John’s (13-6), which fell to 3-16 against Krzyzewski’s Blue Devils. Rysheed Jordan poured in 18 points while Phil Greene IV tallied 13 and D'Angelo Harrison had 12 for the Red Storm.
St. John’s erased an early 11-point deficit as Jordan and Pointer combined for 26 consecutive points to propel the Red Storm to a 43-39 halftime advantage. The Blue Devils managed only one field goal over a seven-minute stretch early in the second half and the Red Storm took advantage, getting their first 10 points from Greene and Pointer as St. John’s took the first of four 10-point leads.
A jumper from Pointer with 8 ½ minutes left made it 61-51, but consecutive three-point plays from Cook, Jones and Okafor ignited a 21-4 surge, which Jones capped with three free throws and a 3-pointer, to put the Blue Devils back in front for good. Cook, Jones and Rasheed Sulaimon combined for five free throws over the final minute to preserve the victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Krzyzewski also claimed his 903rd career victory at the Garden with a win over Michigan State on Nov. 15, 2011, passing former mentor Bob Knight to become the winningest coach in NCAA history. Krzyzewski’s Duke teams improved to 26-8 at MSG. … Pointer is averaging 18 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, 4.5 blocks and 2.5 steals over his last two games. … Okafor scored in double figures for the 19th straight game, moving past Jabari Parker into second place on the Blue Devils’ all-time freshman list.
