No. 6 Duke 79, Pittsburgh 65: Freshman Tyus Jones matched his career high with 22 points and dished out four assists as the Blue Devils defeated the visiting Panthers.
Freshman Jahlil Okafor contributed 14 points and Rasheed Sulaimon added 13 for Duke (16-2, 4-2 ACC), which gave coach Mike Krzyzewski his 999th career victory. Jones made a career-best four 3-pointers as the Blue Devils made 11-of-23 from behind the arc, and his backcourt partner Quinn Cook recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Jamel Artis led the way with a career-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists for Pittsburgh (13-6, 3-3), which lost for only the third time in 12 games. Chris Jones chipped in with 13 points and Michael Young added 11 for the Panthers, who were 3-of-10 from 3-point range.
Cook, Sulaimon and Tyus Jones each made a 3-pointer as Duke jumped to an early 15-4 lead and scored nine of the last 12 to build a 41-25 edge at intermission. Jones finished with 10 points as the Blue Devils went 7-of-15 from behind the arc while turning the ball over just twice in the opening 20 minutes.
Pittsburgh scored nine of the first 12 points in the second half to pull within 10, but Justise Winslow’s 3-pointer ignited a 19-8 Duke run that pushed the lead to 21. The Panthers whittled their deficit to 10 with just over three minutes to go, but could not get any closer as the Blue Devils won their second straight.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Okafor has scored in double figures in every game and the 18th straight tie Jabari Parker for second among all Duke freshmen behind Johnny Dawkins (23). … Pittsburgh made its first trip to Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1979 and the Blue Devils lead the all-time series 8-6. … Krzyzewski can become the first coach in Division I history to reach 1,000 victories when the Blue Devils play St. John’s at Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday.
