No. 3 Syracuse 72, Detroit 68: James Southerland scored 22 points off the bench and Michael Carter-Williams added 12 points and 10 assists as the Orange held on for a 30th consecutive home victory to give coach Jim Boeheim his 900th career win.
Doug Anderson and Juwan Howard Jr. scored 18 apiece for Detroit (6-5), which never led and trailed by as many as 22 before using an 16-0 run to pull within 67-64 with 29.3 seconds left. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Titans.
C.J. Fair added eight points and six rebounds for Syracuse (10-0), which has won 52 straight regular-season games against non-conference opponents.
The Orange led 40-21 at halftime and pushed the margin as wide as 61-39 with 9:30 remaining. Howard scored 11 points during the Titans' 16-0 spurt, but Carter-Williams hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal it.
The Titans were just 3-of-18 from 3-point range.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Boeheim holds a 900-304 record in his 37th season at Syracuse and trails only Mike Krzyzewski (936) and Bob Knight (902) for the most wins at the NCAA Division I level. … Syracuse won by fewer than 20 points for only the third time in its first 10 games. … Syracuse has won five of six all-time meetings with the only loss coming in the 1961-62 season.
