No. 20 New Mexico 65, Valparaiso 52: Chad Adams, Demetrius Walker and Alex Kirk scored 12 points apiece and the Lobos pulled away late to remain unbeaten.
Cameron Bairstow added seven points and seven rebounds for New Mexico (10-0), which extended its four-point halftime lead to 13 with 5:02 remaining on Kirk’s free throw.
Ryan Broekhoff had 24 points and seven rebounds for Valparaiso (6-3), which committed a season-high 22 turnovers in its first game against a ranked opponent. Broekhoff was 8-for-14 from the field, including five 3-pointers.
New Mexico’s backcourt of Kendall Williams and Tony Snell was held to 12 combined points on 3-for-12 shooting, well below their combined average of 27 points.
Kevin Van Wijk scored seven points for Valparaiso, which has lost 35 straight games to ranked opponents. The Crusaders shot 48.6 percent (18-of-37) from the field and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from beyond the arc.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Lobos have won 34 consecutive home games in December dating to Dec. 22, 2004. …New Mexico was 20-for-31 (64.5 percent) from the foul line, while Valparaiso was 8-for-13 (61.5 percent). … The Lobos are 10-0 for the sixth time in the program’s 110-year history.
