Jared Cunningham had a hand in just about all of Oregon State’s offense in the second half to lead the Beavers to a 92-85 victory over visiting California on Thursday.
Cunningham, who along with teammate Ahmad Starks both scored 24 points, opened the second-half scoring with a pair of free throws to break a 38-38 tie and Oregon State never trailed again to notch its first Pac-12 win of the season.
Cunningham scored 18 of his points in the second half and added five assists as the Beavers shot 64 percent and snapped Cal’s two-game winning streak. Starks hit five 3-pointers.
Joe Burton’s layup with 6:48 left gave the Beavers (11-4, 1-2 Pac-12) their biggest lead of the night 77-61. The Bears went on a lightning-quick 12-0 run to get back into the game highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Allen Crabbe.
Devon Collier snapped the run with a dunk and Cunningham, who went 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the second half, added a crucial pair from the line to give the Beavers some breathing room. Cal never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
Cal (12-4, 2-1) got a game-high 26 points from Jorge Gutierrez. Justin Cobbs had 18 and Crabbe finished with 16.
