Patrick Heckmann scored 19 points and Ryan Anderson added 13 as Boston College held off visiting New Hampshire, 67-64, in its season opener on Monday.
Junior Matthew Humphrey -- one of only two upperclassmen on the roster -- had 12 points for the Eagles, who lost 10 lettermen from last season’s team.
Coach Steve Donahue brought in nine freshmen this fall, including Heckmann and Anderson. The new players showed some resiliency down the stretch, as New Hampshire pulled within a point on three separate occasions in the final 5:33.
The last time came with 1:23 left, when a pair of free throws drew the Wildcats within 62-61. But John Cahill -- a graduate student who joined the team as a walk-on last season -- scored his only points of the game with a 3-pointer.
Another freshman, Jordan Daniels, split a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to provide the winning margin.
Heckmann was the most impressive of the first-year players, hitting a pair of key shots to keep the Eagles ahead down the stretch and scoring 11 points after the break.
Alvin Abreu, who shot 0 of 7 in the first half, recovered to score 17 points on 6-of-18 shooting for New Hampshire (1-1).
