TULSA, Okla. – Derrick Williams’ three-point play in the closing seconds helped fifth-seed Arizona nip fourth-seed Texas 70-69 in the third round of the West Region on Sunday at the Bank of Oklahoma Center.
Williams scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats (29-7), who advance to the Sweet 16 for the sixth time in 11 seasons. Arizona faces Duke on Thursday in Anaheim, Calif.
J’Covan Brown came off the bench to score 23 points for Texas (28-8), which stormed back from 13 points down late in the first half.
Brown’s jumper in the lane gave Texas a 69-67 lead with one minute to go. The Wildcats missed three shots on the other end before Texas corralled the rebound. But after a timeout, the Longhorns could not inbound the ball and were called for a five-second violation with 12.3 seconds left.
Arizona took advantage, getting a slashing layup and foul from Williams to put Arizona ahead, 70-69, with 9.6 seconds to play.
The Longhorns had one last chance, but Brown missed a difficult, contested layup as time expired.
