Jason Clark scored 18 points – including a clutch 3-pointer -- and No. 21 Georgetown survived a scare with a 62-59 road win over pesky Old Dominion in Friday's season opener for both teams.
Reigning Big East Player of the Year Austin Freeman scored 17 points and Chris Wright added 19 as the Hoyas won their first game without star center Greg Monroe.
Monroe left for the NBA after last season, leaving the Hoyas to rely on their guards. Clark, Wright and Freeman carried the load and helped the Hoyas exorcise some demons.
Georgetown, which was upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Ohio last season, had lost two of the last three meetings to Old Dominion.
Clark hit a 3-pointer with just over a minute left that put the Hoyas up 59-55 moments after Ben Finney had drawn Old Dominion within one with a pair of free throws.
The Monarchs were never able to tie the game down the stretch.
Finney was one of three players with 13 points for Monarchs, who won the Colonial Athletic Association last season. It was ODU's first home loss since the 2008-09 season.
