SALT LAKE CITY -- Early foul trouble denied Utah Jazz guard Rodney Hood a chance to get into a flow on offense and put his stamp on the game Monday.

When a second chance materialized in the third quarter, Hood did not let it go to waste. The Prince of Threes lived up to his nickname, and the Dallas Mavericks couldn't do anything to stop it.

Hood scored a season-high 25 points, hitting five 3-pointers while leading Utah to a 104-89 victory over Dallas.

Two quick fouls forced Hood to the bench after only three minutes in the first quarter. He enjoyed a much better start after halftime. Hood roared to life in the third quarter, scoring 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting to help the Jazz surge ahead for good.

Utah coach Quin Snyder praised Hood's mental toughness for staying in the game after the early fouls.

"I thought it was one of his better performances because of that, as well as because of how he played," Snyder said.

It started when Hood drained a floater on Utah's opening possession of the half and then followed with two 3-pointers. Those baskets helped fuel a 32-6 run extending back to late in the second quarter.

Then Hood capped it with a pull-up jumper, giving the Jazz a 69-57 lead with 4:04 left in the third.

"I was just real aggressive trying to put pressure on the defense," Hood said. "That was really about it. That first floater was probably the first indication that I was going to get going."

Rudy Gobert totaled 17 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks and a career-high six assists for Utah. Ricky Rubio added 20 points as the Jazz (4-3) improved to 4-0 at home this season.

Dirk Nowitzki scored a season-high 18 points, J.J. Barea chipped in 17 points and Devin Harris added a season-high 15 for Dallas. The Mavericks (1-7) could not overcome 24 turnovers that led to 33 points for Utah.

"Twenty-four turnovers in here, you just can't survive," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "You just can't. Our history is we're a good turnover team, but the last couple of games we've been bad, so we've got to fix it."

Utah started hot in the first quarter, making 7 of 13 shots in the first seven minutes. The Jazz built a 16-8 lead when Gobert fed Derrick Favors for a dunk and then Donovan Mitchell took a steal in for a reverse layup on back-to-back possessions.

Once Dallas got cooking from outside, momentum shifted in a hurry. The Mavericks were able to attack the rim and collapse Utah's defense. It led to easy kick-outs to the perimeter and a flurry of 3-pointers.

Dallas connected on seven of its first nine 3-point attempts, sparking a 22-4 run that gave the Mavericks a 35-23 lead early in the second quarter. Dwight Powell, Barea, Wesley Matthews and Nowitzki all made 3-pointers in that stretch to help Dallas carve out a double-digit advantage.

"We just had to pick up the energy defensively," Favors said. "It was a little too easy for them in the first quarter and the second quarter. We just picked up the energy and tried to make it tough on them. Started switching a lot of screens and we made it tough. They had make tough shots over us."

Utah weathered the initial storm and rallied behind Hood's hot third-quarter shooting and finally put Dallas away in the fourth quarter.

The Mavericks closed within 89-84 when Nerlens Noel's basket finished an 8-0 run. The Jazz held the Mavs scoreless in the next four minutes and ripped off 11 straight points to ice the win. Hood capped the run with his fifth 3-pointer to give Utah a 100-84 lead with 2:54 left.

"We kind of just got away from what got us in the game in the first place, moving the ball, sharing it and trusting each other," Harrison Barnes said. "I think that's big, and we just got to learn from that."
