CHICAGO -- Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler expected to receive an inbounds pass in the right corner and fire a last-second jump shot Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers.
One problem.
"I wasn't open," Butler said.
Instead, Butler and his teammates improvised, transforming a broken play into compelling theater. Forward Pau Gasol caught the inbounds feed at the top of the key and lobbed an alley-oop pass to Butler, who tipped in a shot with 1.2 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Bulls to a 102-100 win over the Pacers.
On the game's final possession, Butler blocked George's layup attempt at the buzzer.
Butler finished with 28 points, including 23 during the second half and overtime. His final basket was his most impressive as he sprinted in from the right baseline and tipped the ball over George.
"Pau put the ball on the money," Butler said. "I don't think there could have been a better pass. Pau is a great passing big (man), and he has done that for me all season."
Bulls guard Aaron Brooks came off the bench to score a season-high 29 points. Rookie forward Bobby Portis added 16 points for Chicago (18-12).
Guard George Hill scored 20 points to lead the Pacers (18-13). George added 19 points.
As Bulls players mobbed Butler, the Pacers stewed over a narrow loss. George credited Gasol and Butler for "a beautiful play" on the alley-oop pass, but he said he was fouled on his final shot at the buzzer.
"I got bodied and I couldn't finish," George said. "(Butler) didn't touch the ball -- no block. I couldn't shoot the layup because (Butler) came down on my arm. It (stinks), but I've been fighting this battle for a while."
Indiana coach Frank Vogel said he would address the final play with the league.
"We've got a lot of heart, got a lot of fight," Vogel said. "I'm proud of my guys."
Chicago won for the first time in four overtime games. The Bulls played without guard Derrick Rose, who was ruled out about an hour before tipoff because of right hamstring tendinitis.
Chicago scored the first seven points of overtime to build a 98-91 lead. Indiana rallied with a 9-2 run to even the score at 100. Guard Monta Ellis drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner with 3.7 seconds remaining in overtime to tie.
The score was even at 91 at the end of the fourth quarter. After Ellis scored to put Indiana on top 91-89, Butler made a driving layup with 25.9 seconds remaining to force a tie. Butler also made a 3-pointer in the final minute that bounced high off the front rim and dropped through the basket.
"To tell you the truth, they just kept giving me the ball," Butler said. "That just shows the faith they have in me, from my teammates all the way up to my coaches. Even though I wasn’t making shots early, they told me to stay with it, try to put the ball in the basket, get to the line. It eventually turned around for me."
Chicago coach Fred Hoiberg praised Butler for his late-game tenacity.
"He was really aggressive taking the ball to the basket," Hoiberg said. "Paul George is one of the best wing defenders, if not the best wing defender, in the league. Jimmy made big plays."
Ellis missed a last-second jump shot to prompt overtime.
Chicago entered the fourth quarter with a 66-62 edge after scoring the final six points of the third quarter. Indiana erased a 14-point deficit in the third with a 19-4 run and took a 59-58 lead.
Chicago led 50-40 at halftime after finishing the second quarter on a 12-3 run. Brooks was 4 of 4 from beyond the arc during the first half and led all scorers with 18 points at the break.
Pacers center Ian Mahinmi exited the game in the third quarter with a sore left knee and did not return.
