Braves 4, Phillies 2: Brothers B.J. Upton and Justin Upton each homered and threw out a runner at the plate as visiting Atlanta evened the final series of the season at one game apiece.
B.J. Upton hit a solo blast in the third and Justin Upton’s two-run shot in the seventh snapped a 2-2 tie, the third time this season and sixth time in their careers the Uptons have went deep in the same contest. Aaron Harang (12-12) pitched 6 2/3 strong innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, and Craig Kimbrel worked around a hit, an error and a walk in the ninth for his National League-leading 46th save as Andrelton Simmons snared Ben Revere's liner with the bases loaded and two outs.
Ryan Howard went 3-for-4 with his 23rd homer and two RBIs for the Phillies, and Chase Utley added a pair of doubles. A.J. Burnett (8-18) surrendered four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, becoming the first Philadelphia pitcher to lose 18 games or more in a season since Hall of Famer Steve Carlton went 13-20 in 1973.
Justin Upton doubled leading off the second and scored on Christian Bethancourt’s double-play grounder, but the Phillies responded in the bottom of the frame when Howard smashed a leadoff homer to right-center. B.J. Upton led off the third with his 12th homer and he gunned down Wil Nieves at home to end the fifth.
Howard struck again in the sixth, following Utley’s double with a run-scoring single to right-center to even the score at 2. Justin Upton, who nailed Utley at the plate on Howard’s single in the fourth, followed Freddie Freeman’s leadoff walk in the seventh with his 29th homer into the left-field seats to put Atlanta ahead 4-2.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Howard’s homer was his 47th in 155 career games against the Braves. … Atlanta has scratched LHP Alex Wood from the start in Sunday’s series finale, and will cover the game by using relievers. … Revere went 1-for-5 and is tied with Washington’s Denard Span for the NL lead in hits (183).
