Andreas Johnsson scored his first career hat trick with three goals 12:20 into the first period, and the Toronto Maple Leafs went on to defeat the visiting Philadelphia Flyers 6-0 on Saturday night.

Garret Sparks made 34 saves to earn his first shutout of the season and the second of his NHL career.

Johnsson entered the game with two goals this season.

Patrick Marleau also scored in the first period. Flyers goaltender Calvin Pickard allowed four goals on six shots before Anthony Stolarz replaced him and gave up two goals on 35 shots.

Josh Leivo and John Tavares also scored for the Maple Leafs, who had lost their two previous games. Mitch Marner had two assists.

Johnsson scored his first goal at 4:45 of the first period, faking a shot from the left circle then sliding the puck between Pickard's pads. Connor Brown and Igor Ozhiganov picked up assists.

He scored again at 6:19 unassisted on a breakaway after a Flyers point shot was blocked at the Toronto blue line.

Marleau gathered in a loose puck and flipped it into the net to notch his fifth goal this season, also unassisted, at 7:44 as Pickard scrambled to get back into his goal.

Johnsson scored another unassisted goal at 12:20 as he stole the puck and slipped a backhand between Pickard's pads. Stolarz then replaced Pickard in the Philadelphia net.

Leivo scored his third goal this season at 11:07 of the second period on a give-and-go with Marner.

Marner did some fancy work to set up the 15th goal of the season by Tavares at 17:10 of the second.

Tyler Bozak was the last Maple Leafs player to score three goals in one period -- scoring three in the third at Colorado on Dec. 21, 2015, after scoring three in third at home against Ottawa on March 28, 2015.

During the first period, the Maple Leafs played a video tribute to Flyers left winger James van Riemsdyk, who left Toronto as a free agent this offseason.
