Bruins 2, Hurricanes 1 (OT): Rookie David Pastrnak scored 4:23 into overtime as visiting Boston won its second straight following a six-game skid (0-3-3).
Carl Soderberg skated up the right wing before sending a backhand feed from below the end line through the slot for Pastrnak, who one-timed a blast from the left faceoff circle past former Bruin Anton Khudobin (28 saves) to end the contest. With the victory, Boston snapped its four-game road slide and moved three points ahead of Ottawa in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The 18-year-old Pastrnak also recorded an assist on fellow rookie Ryan Spooner's fourth goal in six contests for the Bruins, who also climbed within three points of Detroit for third place in the Atlantic Division. Tuukka Rask turned aside 30 shots and showed no ill effects after exiting Saturday's 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers due to dehydration.
Boston College product Nathan Gerbe scored late in the second period for the Hurricanes, who have dropped eight of their last 11 games (3-4-4). Chris Terry and rookie defenseman Danny Biega each notched an assist on Gerbe's eighth goal of the season.
Boston got the early jump as Pastrnak wired a feed from the right circle into the slot for Spooner, who skated to his left before wristing a shot past Khudobin at 2:21 of the first period. The slim advantage stood until Gerbe deposited Terry's feed past Rask to cap a 2-on-1 rush with 22 seconds left in the second.
