Oilers 5, Capitals 4 (SO): Teddy Purcell scored late in the third period before tallying in the fourth round of the shootout as Edmonton recorded its second straight victory following a franchise-high 14-game road winless streak.

Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov tucked the puck past Viktor Fasth's right pad to open the bonus format before Derek Roy's wrist shot beat Braden Holtby (27 saves) in the third round to extend the contest. Fasth made a sprawling save on Eric Fehr in the fourth, and Purcell skated in and wristed the puck between the pads of Holtby for the win.

All-Star Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored with 1:07 remaining in the third period to forge a 4-4 tie and added an assist for the Oilers, who posted a 3-2 victory over the Capitals on Oct. 22. Defenseman Nikita Nikitin and Roy also tallied while Fasth turned aside 20 shots to improve to 4-10-2 on the season.

Captain Alex Ovechkin scored twice to increase his goal total to 10 in his last 11 games for Washington, which has dropped three in a row following a torrid 14-1-4 stretch. Nicklas Backstrom and Jay Beagle also tallied while defensemen Mike Green and John Carlson joined rookie Andre Burakovsky with two assists apiece.

Backstrom deflected Carlson's blast from the point 6:38 into the third period to give Washington a 4-2 lead. Edmonton answered as Purcell pounced on a loose puck and sailed a shot under the crossbar with 4:11 remaining before Nugent-Hopkins' sharp-angle wrister deflected off Holtby's pads and into the net.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ovechkin buried a one-timer from above the left faceoff circle 1:48 into the contest to open the scoring before drilling the goal camera from inside the circle during a power play over 12 minutes later to record his seventh multi-tally performance of the season. The Russian superstar has collected nine goals and five assists in 10 career meetings with Edmonton. ... Washington failed in its bid to win eight in a row at home for the first time since a franchise-best 13-game streak from Jan. 5-March 6, 2010. ... Nikitin scored his second goal in as many games versus the Capitals this season with a blast from the point during a man advantage with four seconds remaining in the second period to trim Edmonton's deficit to 3-2.
