Avalanche 4, Coyotes 3: Danny Briere scored 3:16 into overtime to complete a comeback from a three-goal deficit as visiting Colorado stunned Arizona.
Briere's attempted crossing pass went off the stick of the Coyotes' Martin Hanzal and caromed past netminder Mike Smith to give the Avalanche their fourth win in five games. Captain Gabriel Landeskog scored a pair of goals and Matt Duchene netted the tying tally early in the third period while Calvin Pickard stopped all 25 shots in relief of Reto Berra (five saves).
Antoine Vermette and defenseman Mark Stone each had a goal and an assist for Arizona, which lost for the fourth time in five games (1-2-2). Rookie Tobias Rieder scored his second goal while Mike Smith turned aside 31 shots to fall to 0-5-2 in his last seven starts.
The Coyotes appeared on their way to a blowout victory after scoring three times on their first eight shots to knock out Berra. Vermette's redirection at 3:36 opened the scoring before Stone's shot deflected off Avalanche defenseman Nick Holden's glove and Reider ended Berra's night with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle 33 seconds later.
Landeskog got Colorado on the scoreboard at 5:49 of the second, tucking in a rebound of defenseman Erik Johnson's backhander from the slot before sliding a rebound between the legs of Smith 96 seconds into the third period to cut the deficit to 3-2. Colorado tied it 2 1/2 minutes later when Duchene's attempted pass from behind the net hit the stick of the Coyotes' Lauri Korpikoski and fluttered over the glove of Smith.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Avalanche D Johnson appeared to be knocked unconscious when he took a blow to the head from Hanzal late in the contest. ... Stone halted a seven-game point drought with his first multiple-point performance of the season. ... Hanzal returned to the lineup after a four-game injury absence while Avalanche leading scorer Alex Tanguay sat out his second straight game with a fractured cheekbone.
