Rangers 4, Flames 3 (SO): Benoit Pouliot scored in the seventh round of the shootout as New York ended a four-game losing streak on its franchise-high nine-game homestand.
After posting consecutive overtime victories, the Flames' good fortune ran out as the Rangers competed in their first shootout of the season. The teams traded tallies in the first, fourth and sixth rounds before Pouliot dangled the puck and extended his arm to tap it past a sprawling Karri Ramo (29 saves) in the seventh. Henrik Lundqvist (18 saves) denied Mikael Backlund's attempt to answer, preserving the victory.
Derek Stepan scored his second goal in 19 contests and added an assist while Carl Hagelin tallied to snap an eight-game drought. Chris Kreider scored to forge a 3-3 tie with 7:53 remaining in the third period for the Rangers, who posted just their second win in their last 10 home games (2-7-1).
Curtis Glencross collected a goal and an assist while rookie Sean Monahan and Backlund also tallied for the Flames, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Playing in his second game since returning from a hairline fracture in his foot, Monahan gave Calgary a 3-2 lead by accepting Glencross' backhanded centering feed and chipping the puck past Lundqvist at 4:44 of the third period. New York answered as Kreider backhanded home a loose puck to level the contest.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lundqvist snapped a seven-game winless streak (0-6-1) at Madison Square Garden and posted his second win in six contests (2-3-1) since signing a seven-year, $59.5 million contract extension. ... New York failed to score on 1:21 of a 5-on-3 power play late in the third period, while Calgary couldn't convert after Kreider was whistled for a four-minute high-sticking penalty. ... Playing in his second NHL game, New York D Dylan McIlrath engaged in a spirited fight with Calgary RW Brian McGrattan. ... New York C Brian Boyle notched an assist on Kreider's goal for his first point since Nov. 10.
