Blues 3, Avalanche 1: Chris Stewart and Andy McDonald each had a goal and an assist as host St. Louis clinched its second consecutive playoff berth while avoiding a season series sweep by lowly Colorado.
Patrik Berglund added a power-play goal early in the second period and Brian Elliott stopped 17 shots for the Blues, who reside one point behind fifth-place San Jose in the Western Conference. The Sharks skated to a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
Stewart opened the scoring in the first period with his 100th career goal, tipping defenseman Jordan Leopold’s point shot past Semyon Varlamov (31 saves) while Avalanche forward Jamie McGinn served an interference penalty. Berglund deflected defenseman Jay Bouwmeester’s shot 2:55 into the second as St. Louis scored twice with the man advantage for the first time since Feb. 15.
McDonald made it 3-0 less than 2 1/2 minutes later, taking a pass from Vladimir Sobotka down low before carrying the puck in front and sliding a backhand shot between Varlamov’s pads. Cody McLeod had the lone goal late in the period for the Avalanche, who are an NHL-worst 3-16-4 on the road.
St. Louis improved to 10-3-0 in April and avoided its third sweep in eight seasons at the hands of the Avalanche, who sit at the bottom of the conference.
