Penguins 2, Islanders 0: Tomas Vokoun made 35 saves as host Pittsburgh overcame an injury to captain Sidney Crosby to complete a perfect month of March and set a franchise-record shutout streak.
Matt Cooke and James Neal scored in the third period for the Penguins, who finished the month 15-0-0 and won their franchise-best 12th straight home game despite losing their top two scorers - Crosby and Chris Kunitz. Jarome Iginla made his debut with Pittsburgh, registering three shots and finishing plus-1.
Crosby was hit in the mouth by a deflected shot from teammate Brooks Orpik 88 seconds into the game and did not return. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma added that Crosby was taken to the hospital and will have oral surgery. Kunitz was assessed a major penalty for checking from behind and a game misconduct after a hit on Josh Bailey with under four minutes remaining in the second period.
Vokoun stopped 12 shots in the first period, 12 in the second and 11 in the third for his second straight shutout and 51st of his career. Pittsburgh has not allowed a goal in the last 208 minutes, 24 seconds, eclipsing the team’s previous mark of 187:30 set in 1993.
Vokoun was spectacular on a 5-on-3 penalty kill that lasted 1:55 and made a blocker save on a breakaway chance by Michael Grabner shortly before Cooke broke the deadlock. Cooke swatted a loose puck past Evgeni Nabokov (25 saves) 8:10 into the third period. Neal fired a wrist shot between Nabokov’s pads just under five minutes later to double the advantage.
