Dedrick Basile hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds, leading Cal State-Bakersfield past New Mexico State 57-54 on Saturday night in the WAC Tournament championship at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Bakersfield is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The loss ended New Mexico State's run of four straight NCAA Tournament berths.
New Mexico State's Tanveer Bhullar tied the score with a free throw with 14 seconds left. Bakersfield advanced the ball and called timeout. Basile used a crossover dribble to free himself to swish the winner from the left wing. Basile finished with 18 points.
Bakersfield led 32-22 at halftime behind 10 points apiece from Jaylin Airington and Damiyne Durham. The Aggies shot 38 percent from the floor and turned it over eight times in the first half.
New Mexico State quickly cut into the deficit in the second half. A 3-pointer from Ian Baker capped a 9-0 run and trimmed the Cal State-Bakersfield lead to 38-36 with 15 minutes to play in the second half.
New Mexico State's Pascal Siakam, the WAC Player of the Year, finished with 11 points and Baker had 10.
