Sophomore guard Jordan McLaughlin had 19 points and six assists to help USC hold on for a 90-82 victory over New Mexico on Saturday night at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
Sophomore guard Elijah Stewart had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans (3-0), who nearly blew a 20-point lead over the final seven minutes. Junior guard Julian Jacobs had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Junior forward Tim Williams had 25 points and 15 rebounds for New Mexico (3-1). Sophomore guard Elijah Brown scored 18 points. Junior center Obij Aget had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The teams traded leads until USC mounted an 11-2 run to go up 23-14 with 8:18 to play in the opening period. The Trojans took a 48-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
USC went up by 22 on a layup by McLaughlin early in the second half. New Mexico cut the deficit to 15 on a 3-pointer by Brown with 12:38 remaining and got within 13 on a jumper by Williams with 10:28 to go.
The Trojans went back up by 20 on a 3-pointer by Jacobs with 7:41 to play. The Lobos staged 11-0 and 12-2 runs to get within four on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Cullen Neal with 1:41 remaining, but the Trojans withstood the charge.
