Virginia Commonwealth 82, Virginia Tech 52: Melvin Johnson went 8-of-11 from 3-point range en route to a career-high 27 points and put on a show in the first half as the visiting Rams jumped out early and sprinted past the Hokies in Richmond, Va.
Juvonte Reddic added 10 points and 11 rebounds for VCU (10-3), which forced 27 turnovers and had 22 steals. Treveon Graham had seven points and seven boards as the Rams picked up their sixth win in seven games.
Jarell Eddie scored 12 points for Virginia Tech (7-4), which had a four-game winning streak come to an end. Ben Emelogu added 12 points and six rebounds for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech scored the first six points and was up 8-6 just over four minutes in when VCU turned things around dramatically. Johnson buried five 3-pointers during a 31-0 run that put the Rams in control.
At one point Johnson had six field goals to Virginia Tech's three before the Hokies ended a scoring drought of more than 10 minutes and pulled within 42-22 at the half. Virginia Tech chopped the deficit to 15 points early in the second before a 13-3 run spread it back out and VCU coasted to the finish.
GAME NOTEBOOK: VCU G Rob Brandenberg scored five points, and his first basket of the second half moved him over 1,000 points in his career. … Johnson totaled 13 points in the previous three games. … The Hokies shot 35.4 percent in their lowest-scoring game of the season.
