Washington State 88, Eastern Washington 70: Brock Motum, the leading scorer in the Pac-12 Conference last season, scored 23 points to lead the host Cougars to a season-opening victory at the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
Motum, a 6-foot-10 senior, shot 9 for 13 from the floor and also had 10 rebounds. Mike Ladd, a transfer from former Fresno State, and DaVonte Lacy contributed 15 points apiece and D.J. Shelton had a game-high 12 rebounds for Washington State (1-0), which won the battle of the boards 43-27.
Justin Crosgile, who played a season at St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia before transferring, scored 28 points in his debut for Eastern Washington (0-1). He was 7 for 17 from 3-point range.
Eastern Washington stayed close until an 11-0 run in the first half stretched Washington State’s lead to 31-15. The Cougars took a 39-20 lead into the half.
Washington State shot 29-for-53 from the floor (54.7 percent), while holding Eastern Washington to 25-for-72 (34.7).
GAME NOTEBOOK: Eastern Washington hasn’t won at Washington State since 1952, falling to 11-55 overall against the Cougars. … Royce Woolridge, who sat out last season after transferring from Kansas, finished with seven points for the Cougars. … Eastern Washington senior forward Collin Chiverton, the team’s second-leading scorer last season and the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year, finished with three points.
