Rick Jackson finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots, and No. 20 Syracuse escaped with an 84-80 overtime victory over visiting Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.
The Orange (22-6, 9-6 Big East) managed to force overtime when a Jackson free throw tied it at 70-70 with 9.9 seconds left and Rutgers' James Beatty missed a 3-pointer at the other end. A Kris Joseph 3-pointer with 2:49 left in the extra frame gave Syracuse a 75-71 lead that it would not relinquish.
Joseph led the Orange with 21 points, while C.J. Fair and Brandon Triche added 17 points apiece. Mike Coburn and Gilvydas Biruta paced Rutgers (13-13, 4-10) with 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Syracuse finished with a huge advantage at the foul line, making 34 of 47 free throws while the Scarlet Knights hit just 9 of 14.
