Georgia Tech stepped out of Atlantic Coast Conference play and snapped a five-game losing streak Wednesday, downing Tennessee-Chattanooga at home 62-53.
The Yellow Jackets (11-14) got 27 points from Glen Rice Jr., in their first victory since beating Virginia Tech 72-57 on Jan. 25. The Mocs (14-14) were led by Omar Wattad’s 18 points in losing their fourth straight.
After falling behind by 11 points in the first half, Tennessee-Chattanooga hung around, pulling within 39-37 on Deantre Jefferson’s layup with 9:54 to go. Two Ricky Taylor free throws with 5:23 remaining brought Tennessee-Chattanooga within 52-46.
But Iman Shumpert scored on a dunk for Georgia Tech with 4:40 left, and his free throw with 3:59 to go made it 55-46.The Mocs would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Shumpert added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
