D.J. Kennedy finished with 14 points and eight rebounds and Malik Boothe added 14 points as St. John’s took down No. 11 Notre Dame, 72-54, at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
Dwight Hardy chipped in 12 points for the Red Storm (11-5, 4-2 Big East), who dominated on the inside, building up a 32-21 rebounding advantage and getting to the free throw line 29 times, converting 24.
The Fighting Irish could not find any rhythm offensively in the first half, shooting 4 of 14 from the floor, including 1 of 7 from 3-point range. St. John’s wasn’t much better at 8 of 23 but was able to force 14 turnovers and kept Notre Dame without a field goal during a stretch of more than eight minutes early in the game. The Storm led 26-19 at the break.
The Fighting Irish (14-4, 3-3) pulled to within 40-33 with 12:27 left in the game, before St. John's went on an 11-1 run over the next four minutes to put it away.
Notre Dame has had a rough week, losing to Marquette and St. John’s, and now has to face Cincinnati and Marquette again before traveling to No. 5 Pittsburgh.
