Jazz 97, Warriors 90: Mo Williams scored 25 points and Al Jefferson collected 19 and 12 rebounds as Utah earned a rare road victory over host Golden State.
Gordon Hayward scored 13 points and Derrick Favors collected 12 and 13 boards off the bench for the Jazz, who have won back-to-back road contests following a 10-game losing streak away from Salt Lake City. Utah pulled a half-game in front of the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Warriors could have clinched their playoff spot with a win over the Jazz but instead had their lead over the Houston Rockets for the No. 6 spot trimmed to one game. Stephen Curry scored 22 points, David Lee added 21 and 13 rebounds and Klay Thompson scored 20 for Golden State.
The Warriors pulled to within 80-76 on Thompson’s layup with 9:36 left but Utah came right back with baskets on consecutive possessions to make it an eight-point gap. Hayward’s 3-pointer with 4:20 remaining made it 91-80 before Thompson and Curry connected from beyond the arc on consecutive possessions to trim it back to a five-point deficit.
Lee’s layup with 1:21 left brought Golden State to within 93-90, but Jarrett Jack missed a tying 3-point attempt and Williams provided the dagger for the Jazz when his 3-pointer found the bottom of the net with 14 seconds remaining.
Curry scored 12 points in the first quarter to help the Warriors take a 27-24 lead. His 3-pointer early in the second stretched it to 38-29 before Utah began to take control. Hayward capped a 17-3 burst with a 3-pointer and the Jazz took a 56-48 lead into the half.
Golden State cut the deficit to a point in the third quarter but never managed to retake the lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Utah improved to 12-27 on the road. The Jazz will host Oklahoma City and Minnesota this week before finishing with two straight on the road. … Curry and Thompson combined to go 6-for-12 from beyond the arc and are the top 3-point shooting tandem in the NBA. … The Warriors host Minnesota on Tuesday and get three of their final five at home.
