Kole Calhoun went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs as the Los Angeles Angels snapped the host Seattle Mariners' eight-game winning streak with a 7-4 victory Wednesday afternoon at Safeco Field.
Calhoun's run-scoring single in the fourth inning snapped a 2-2 tie. He added a two-run homer in the sixth, his fifth long ball of the season, to give the Angels a 6-2 advantage.
Los Angeles right-hander Garrett Richards (5-4), returning from the 10-day disabled list after recovering from a left hamstring strain, went 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. He walked one and struck out eight.
Blake Parker allowed two hits in the ninth to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but he got out of the jam for his 10th save.
The Angels opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Shohei Ohtani reached base on catcher's interference and scored on Luis Valbuena's double into the left field corner.
The Mariners responded in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back home runs by Kyle Seager, his 16th of the season, and Ryon Healy, his 17th. It was the first time this season the Mariners hit back-to-back homers.
Run-scoring singles by Valbuena and Calhoun gave the Angels a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
Los Angeles opened the fifth with three consecutive hits, a double by Mike Trout and singles by Justin Upton and Albert Pujols, to knock out Mariners starter Mike Leake (8-5). The right-hander went four-plus innings, allowing nine hits and four runs (three earned). He walked one and struck out four.
After Calhoun's homer in the top of the sixth, the Mariners chased Richards and got one run back in the bottom of the inning.
Guillermo Heredia led off with an infield single, and Dee Gordon reached base when Richards couldn't handle his sacrifice bunt down the first base line. After striking out Jean Segura, Richards was replaced by Cam Bedrosian. With two outs, Nelson Cruz lined a run-scoring single to right field to make it 6-3.
The Mariners threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs, but Hansel Robles struck out pinch hitter Denard Span and Gordon before second baseman David Fletcher made a leaping, over-the-shoulder catch on a broken-bat liner by Segura to end the inning.
Both teams got a single run in the eighth to complete the scoring.
