SEATTLE -- Rookie left-hander Pat Dean turned in the finest performance of his young career on a day when Seattle veteran Felix Hernandez struggled, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 7-2 win over the Mariners on Friday night.
Making his second career start and his fourth appearance since being promoted earlier this month, Dean (1-1) gave up four hits and two runs and had eight strikeouts in seven innings to outduel Hernandez, the Mariners' ace.
Miguel Sano and Joe Maurer each homered for the Twins (13-34).
Hernandez (4-4) gave up six runs and eight hits in six innings in one of his worst outings of the season. The six earned runs were a season high allowed by Hernandez, and four of the Twins' eight hits asainst him went for extra bases.
The Twins used a five-run third inning to put Seattle (28-19) on the ropes, eventually scoring seven runs for the second game in a row.
Minnesota has won two consecutive games for the first time since May 14-15.
Twins relievers Ryan Pressly and Brandon Kintzler finished the win by pitching two scoreless innings. Seattle had just five hits.
Maurer went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Sano was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs for Minnesota. Eduardo Nunez also had two hits for the Twins.
The Twins used a five-run third to take a commanding 6-1 lead against Hernandez. Minnesota had five hits -- including three doubles -- while sending all nine hitters to the plate in the inning.
Twins center fielder Danny Santana, the No. 9 hitter, opened the inning with a double and moved to third on shortstop Eduardo Nunez's bunt single. Brian Dozier followed with an RBI double to give the Twins a 2-1 lead.
Maurer delivered an RBI single and Robbie Grossman added a bases-loaded, two-run double. Designated hitter Byung Ho Park finished the outburst with an RBI groundout that scored Sano.
Right fielder Franklin Gutierrez gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead with a one-out solo homer in the first. Sano answered in the second with a home run for his ninth of the season.
Mariners first baseman Dae-Ho Lee had an RBI single in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-2.
Minnesota third baseman Trevor Plouffe came out of the game after three innings for undisclosed reasons.
NOTES: The Mariners placed CF Leonys Martin on the 15-day disabled list Friday. Martin, who was hitting .262 and went on quite a tear while serving as Seattle's leadoff hitter last week, hurt his hamstring in the second inning of the Mariners' victory over Oakland on Wednesday. ... Seattle recalled OF Stefen Romero from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday. Romero replaced Martin on the roster and was hitting eighth in the Mariners' lineup. ... Twins pitching coach Neil Allen was not with the team after being suspended without pay Thursday. Allen has a pending DWI charge. Minor league pitching coordinator Eric Rasmussen is filling the role while Allen is out. ... Minnesota entered Friday's game having won two of its past 10 contests. ... With Martin out of Seattle's lineup, LF Norichika Aoki moved into centerfield and was back in the leadoff role.
