Giants 6, Cardinals 3: Travis Ishikawa slammed a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as San Francisco defeated visiting St. Louis to win the National League Championship Series in five games.
Pablo Sandoval singled and Brandon Belt walked against Michael Wacha (0-1) before Ishikawa drilled a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right for the walk-off victory. San Francisco’s Michael Morse hit a tying pinch-hit homer in the eighth and Joe Panik hit a two-run homer earlier in the contest for the Giants, who will meet the Kansas City Royals in the World Series.
Jeremy Affeldt (1-0) retired Oscar Taveras with the bases loaded to end the top of the ninth prior to the game-winning surge that sends San Francisco to its third World Series in five seasons. Matt Adams and Tony Cruz hit homers for the Cardinals and Jon Jay went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.
St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright retired the final 10 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the sixth inning, and allowed two runs, four hits and struck out seven in seven innings. Giants ace Madison Bumgarner gave up three runs and five hits in eight innings and was named NLCS MVP.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the third on two walks and Jay’s RBI’s double to left, which was misplayed in left field by Ishikawa. Gregor Blanco singled with two out in the third before Panik hit a two-run shot to put San Francisco ahead before Cardinals took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on solo homers by Adams and Cruz.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval went 2-for-4 and has reached base in 23 consecutive postseason games. … St. Louis C Yadier Molina (oblique) was still unable to swing the bat and was out of the lineup for the third straight game. … The homers by Panik, Morse and Ishikawa were San Francisco’s first three of the series while the Cardinals hit eight.
