Padres 12, Cardinals 1: Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable homered and drove in four runs apiece as San Diego routed visiting St. Louis.
Gyorko went 3-for-5 and scored two runs while Alexi Amarista had three hits and scored three times for the Padres, who matched their season high in hits with 16 and have won two straight following a three-game losing streak. Jesse Hahn (7-2) celebrated his 25th birthday by recording his seventh win in his last eight starts while yielding one run on four hits over seven innings.
Yangervis Solarte went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, including an run-scoring single in the first off Joe Kelly (2-2), who allowed four runs on seven hits over five frames. The Cardinals have lost six of their last eight to fall 2 1/2 games behind National League Central-leading Milwaukee.
Amarista scored on a wild pitch in the third and the Padres moved ahead 4-0 in the fourth as Gyorko delivered a one-out solo homer and Yonder Alonso followed with his first triple of the season before scoring on Venable’s single up the middle. St. Louis cut the deficit to 4-1 in the seventh as Matt Adams belted a leadoff double and later scored on Peter Bourjos’ fielder’s choice.
The Padres, who had scored three or fewer runs in 20 of their previous 28 games, erupted for eight runs in the bottom half of the inning and capped the rally with Gyorko’s bases-loaded double and Venable’s three-run blast. Seth Maness was charged with four runs in the inning for St. Louis, which has scored one run in each of its last three games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: St. Louis acquired RHP Justin Masterson from Cleveland in exchange for minor-league OF James Ramsey prior to the contest. … Solarte is the first player in Padres history to record at least one RBI in seven of his first eight games with the team. … Gyorko homered for the first time since going deep twice on May 9 and has gone 6-for-11 since coming off the disabled list on Sunday.
