Rays 1, Yankees 0: Ben Zobrist lined the decisive single with two out in the ninth inning as Tampa Bay blanked visiting New York.
Logan Forsythe and James Loney delivered back-to-back one-out singles in the ninth off Shawn Kelley (3-6). Matt Joyce drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Zobrist sent the third pitch from Kelley into right field to plate Forsythe.
Joel Peralta (3-4) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Rays, who have won three of their past four games. The Yankees have lost four of five games and are 5 1/2 games behind the Kansas City Royals for the American League’s second wild card.
Rays starter Alex Colome allowed six hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. New York’s Chris Capuano gave up two hits while tossing six shutout innings.
The Yankees threatened in the seventh when Ichiro Suzuki stroked a two-out double and John Ryan Murphy walked. Steven Geltz replaced Colome and induced Brian McCann to fly to center.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees SS Derek Jeter didn’t start while mired in a 0-for-24 slump. … Tampa Bay recalled Colome, LHP C.J. Riefenhauser and INF Nick Franklin from Triple-A Durham. … New York RHP Masahiro Tanaka pitched five scoreless innings against minor leaguers on Monday and could return to the majors this weekend.
