Brewers 3, Cardinals 2 (12): Hector Gomez delivered a tiebreaking RBI single in the top of the 12th inning to lift Milwaukee in the opener of a nine-game road trip.
Gomez dumped a single over the head of first baseman Matt Adams to score Carlos Gomez and Matt Clark plated the tying run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth as the Brewers won for the fifth time in six games to remain 1 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the National League's second wild card. Brandon Kintzler (3-3) retired the only batter he faced and Francisco Rodriguez got the final three outs for his 42nd save.
Gerardo Parra homered among two hits to pull Milwaukee within four games of first-place St. Louis, which had its lead in the NL Central cut to 2 1/2 games over the Pirates. Kevin Siegrist (1-4) took the loss for the Cardinals, who failed to score after pushing across two runs in their first at-bat.
The Cardinals came out swinging against Milwaukee ace Wily Peralta with three straight hits to open the game and Adams drew a bases-loaded walk to force home the first run before an out was recorded. Peralta escaped relatively unscatched when a second run came home on Jhonny Peralta's double-play grounder.
The Brewers got on the scoreboard with two outs in the fourth inning when Parra, who came in 7-for-14 against St. Louis starter Lance Lynn, sent a deep fly into the seats in left to cut the deficit in half. Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal walked Jonathan Lucroy to lead off the ninth and yielded a double to Aramis Ramirez before Clark tied it with a sacrifice fly.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lynn allowed one run on five hits over seven innings while Peralta also went seven, giving up two runs on five hits. ... ... Clark has knocked home seven runs during a four-game RBI streak. ... Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter scored his 94th run, putting him within six of his second consecutive 100-run season.
