Angels 7, Mariners 5: Erick Aybar went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and Mike Trout had three hits and two RBIs as visiting Los Angeles earned a split of the four-game series.
Kole Calhoun scored three runs and reached base four times on two hits and two walks and C.J. Cron went 3-for-5 and scored twice for the Angels, who rested Albert Pujols for the first time this season. Michael Saunders homered and had three RBIs for the Mariners, who played without Robinson Cano (illness) for the initial time since he joined the club as a free agent in the offseason.
Matt Shoemaker (3-1) struck out six in 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs and four hits while winning his third straight decision. Fernando Salas served up a two-run homer to Kyle Seager in the ninth before Ernesto Frieri entered to get the final two outs to record his eighth save.
Trout hit a sacrifice fly in the first and Grant Green delivered a two-out run-scoring single in the fourth before Aybar hit his blast off Brandon Maurer (1-4) over the fence in right-center to make it 5-0. Seattle got on the board in the bottom of the inning on Saunders’ two-run homer to right.
Trout smacked an RBI single to center in the sixth to make it 6-2 and Saunders got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly. Cron doubled in the ninth and scored on John McDonald’s single to cap Los Angeles’ 15-hit attack.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Maurer gave up five runs, six hits and four walks in four innings while losing his fourth consecutive start. … Trout has four multi-hit outings during a 10-game hitting streak. … Seattle 2B Nick Franklin struck out in all four at-bats and has fanned six times in seven at-bats over the last two games.
