Mariners 3, Angels 1: Felix Hernandez outdueled C.J. Wilson as host Seattle continued its mastery of Los Angeles this season.
Mike Zunino drove in all three runs with a two-run single and a solo homer as the Mariners improved to 6-2 against the Angels in 2014. Hernandez (7-1) came within one out of his 10th career shutout and 24th complete game, allowing one run and four hits while striking out nine en route to his fourth straight victory.
Albert Pujols plated the lone run for Los Angeles, which looks to earn a split of the four-game series on Thursday. Wilson (6-4) lost for just the second time in six decisions, yielding three runs and five hits over 7 2/3 frames.
Hernandez retired the first nine Angels he faced before allowing the first two batters to reach in the fourth. The right-hander escaped that jam unscathed but was unable to go the distance as Mike Trout hit a two-out single in the ninth and scored on a double by Pujols before Fernando Rodney recorded the final out for his 13th save.
Seattle gave Hernandez all the offensive support he needed in the second inning, when Justin Smoak led off with a single and Kyle Seager drew a walk before Zunino plated them both with a two-out single to right field. Zunino added insurance by leading off the eighth with his seventh blast of the season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hernandez has not thrown a shutout or a complete game since registering five in 2012. ... Mariners 2B Robinson Cano went 0-for-4, marking just the second time in six games he was held without at least two hits. ... Rodney has converted 10 of his last 11 save opportunities.
