Angels 3, Phillies 0: Garrett Richards struck out eight in seven innings while Albert Pujols registered two hits and scored two runs as visiting Los Angeles completed a two-game sweep of Philadelphia.
Pujols was 1-for-21 on the road trip before recording a double and single in the first three innings and Raul Ibanez knocked in his 1,200th career run for the Angels. Richards (4-0) scattered five hits and did not walk a batter while throwing 106 pitches and Joe Smith pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Chase Utley collected a pair of doubles for the Phillies, who have dropped their last eight interleague contests. Philadelphia starter A.J. Burnett (2-3) yielded three runs on seven hits and five walks over five innings while escaping more damage with six strikeouts and key double plays in the third and fifth frames.
Pujols doubled with two outs in the first inning and scored on a single by Ibanez before Efren Navarro’s two-out RBI single in the second gave the Angels a 2-0 lead. Pujols opened the third with a single and came all the way around on Erick Aybar’s double to center field.
Jimmy Rollins singled and Utley doubled with one out in the sixth for the Phillies, but Richards struck out Ryan Howard and got Marlon Byrd on a pop up to end the threat. Richards also stranded a runner at third in the seventh and Ernesto Frieri retired Philadelphia in order in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pujols’ double in the first inning tied him with Lou Gehrig for 34th on the all-time list with 534. … Rollins was 1-for-4 and tied Ed Delahanty for third on the franchise’s all-time hit list with 2,211. … Utley (2B) and Rollins (SS) started their 1,100th game as a double-play combination, most of any active pair in the majors.
