Mariners 8, Angels 2: James Paxton struck out nine in seven shutout innings as visiting Seattle completed a three-game sweep of Los Angeles to start 3-0 for the third time in franchise history.

Mike Zunino hit a three-run homer and Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Mariners. Justin Smoak and Corey Hart also homered and Brad Miller and Stefen Romero added RBIs for Seattle, which outscored the Angels 26-8 in the series while sweeping a series in Anaheim for the first time since June 9-11, 2006.

Paxton (1-0) gave up two hits and two walks while stifling Los Angeles batters on 99 pitches. The left-hander retired the final 11 hitters he faced, a stretch that began with five consecutive strikeouts.

Cano singled in Seattle’s first run with a third-inning single off Hector Santiago (0-1). Miller sliced a single to left in the fifth to make it 2-0 and Romero drove in the first run of a four-run sixth by lacing a double off the glove of Angels third baseman David Freese for his first major-league hit.

Zunino hit a towering blast to left field later in the sixth to give Seattle a 6-0 lead. Smoak and Hart hit back-to-back homers in the ninth off Ernesto Frieri before Los Angeles tallied twice in the ninth when Mike Trout hit an RBI triple and scored on Freese’s sacrifice fly.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle had 17 extra-base hits (six homers, two triples, nine doubles) in the series. … Santiago allowed four runs and seven hits in five-plus innings in his Los Angeles debut after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the offseason. … Smoak went 6-for-13 with two homers, two doubles and seven RBIs in the series.
