Orioles 6, Red Sox 0: Chris Tillman worked seven strong innings and Adam Jones homered twice as Baltimore took the series opener from visiting Boston.
Tillman (13-3) struck out eight while surrendering two hits and received all the support he would need in the first inning, when Jones belted a two-run homer to the opposite field in right. He added a solo blast down the line in right in the fifth and Manny Machado homered and singled in a run for the Orioles, who snapped a three-game slide.
John Lackey (7-8) was reached for five runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings as the Red Sox dropped into second place in the American League East, a half-game behind the Tampa Bay Rays. Baltimore is three games back of Boston.
The Red Sox loaded the bases in the first on a single and a pair of walks but Tillman escaped the jam and would not allow another hit until Jacoby Ellsbury’s two-out double in the fifth.
Machado singled in Nate McLouth in the third inning to make it 3-0 and his line drive into the stands in left ended Lackey’s night in the seventh. J.J. Hardy added a solo homer in the ninth to cap the scoring.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lackey had gone at least seven innings while allowing two or fewer runs in six straight starts before the All-Star break. He has been knocked around for nine runs and 19 hits in a pair of losses since coming back. … Boston, which leads the majors in runs, has been shut out twice in its last four games. … Machado’s two hits matched his total from the previous five contests.
