San Diego gave up four runs in the first quickly recovered and blasted the Orioles 9-4 on Sunday.

An error by San Diego third baseman Lance Zawadski ended what should have been a scoreless first inning. Instead Adam Jones scored on Zawadski’s miscue and Matt Wieters followed with a bases-clearing double that led to an early 4-0 Orioles lead.

San Diego replied by scoring in each of the first three innings. Adrian Gonzalez hit an RBI double in the first and Will Venable scored on an error in the second to cut the lead to 4-2. They reduced the lead to one in the third when Nick Hundley singled in David Eckstein and took the lead two batters later, courtesy of a three-run homer by Venable.

The six early runs were charged to young Orioles starter Jake Arrieta (2-1), who suffered his first career loss. Arrieta allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks in only three innings.

The early offense also atoned for the costly made behind Padres starter Jon Garland, who recovered from the disastrous first and dominated the rest of the game. He threw six innings, giving up four runs (none earned) on four hits and two walks. Garland (7-5) struck out three and retired the last 14 batters he faced.

The Padres added a run in the fifth on a Venable RBI single and two more in the seventh via a Hundley home run.

San Diego’s bullpen made the lead stand as Luke Gregerson, Mike Adams and Joe Thatcher combined to allow just a hit and a walk in three scoreless innings. The Padres bullpen lower its ERA to 2.64, which is the best in the majors.
