Anton Forsberg made 22 saves for his NHL-leading second shutout of the season as the Ottawa Senators defeated the visiting Seattle Kraken 3-0 on Saturday night.
Tim Stutzle had a goal and an assist for the Senators, clinching the victory with an empty-netter with 2:14 remaining. Adam Gaudette and Brady Tkachuk also scored for the Senators, who had lost three of their previous four games -- including a 2-1 defeat Friday night to the host New York Rangers.
The Kraken lost their second in a row to drop to 1-2-0 on their five-game trip. Goaltender Philipp Grubauer stopped 20 of 22 shots.
The Senators opened the scoring on a goal that required a coach's challenge at 5:28 of the first period. Following a scramble in front of the Seattle net, Zack MacEwen got the puck just outside the left post and tried to jam it in. The puck went off Grubauer's pads and he attempted to smother the puck with his catching glove before Nick Cousins poked it free to Gaudette, who was standing alone near the right post and slammed it into the net.
The officials originally ruled that Grubauer had frozen the puck, but Senators coach Travis Green challenged the call and a review determined the goalie never had full control, changing the decision to a goal.
Ottawa extended its lead to 2-0 at 11:11 of the second period. Tim Stutzle carried the puck down the right wing and left a drop pass to Jacob Bernard-Docker for a shot from the point. Tkachuk tipped the puck from the slot and teammate Ridly Greig was positioned in front of the net to screen Grubauer.
Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour, who had a hat trick Tuesday in an 8-2 victory at Montreal, returned to the lineup after missing Thursday's 4-1 loss to Toronto to return home to Seattle to be with wife Ryian as they welcomed their second child, a baby girl. Despite the presence of Montour, their power-play quarterback, the Kraken went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
