Johnny Gaudreau scored in the third round of the shootout and the Calgary Flames erased a two-goal deficit in the third period en route to a 3-2 road victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.
With the opportunity to win the game on his stick, Gaudreau made all kinds of moves before tucking a backhand shot past Stars goalie Ben Bishop for the clinching tally.
Flames goalie David Rittich stopped 34 shots, four in overtime -- including an Alexander Radulov penalty shot in the extra period -- plus two of three in the shootout to backstop the Flames to a win that snapped a six-game losing streak against Dallas.
Trailing 2-0, the Flames received a much-needed jolt when Elias Lindholm put them on the board on his team's first power play of the game at 2:49 of the third period. Lindholm, who twice kept the play in the offensive zone, gained the puck at the point position, moved into the high slot and wired a shot off the far post and into the net for his second goal of the season.
Noah Hanifin tied the score at the 5:32 mark. Hanifin joined a rush and received a sublime pass from Mikael Backlund that left him an empty net to hit for his second tally of the season and eventually force extra time.
Not only did the decision put the Flames in the win column, it snapped their losing streak in games that went to the skills competition. The victory was Calgary's first in a shootout since Nov. 5, 2017, a 5-4 home victory over the New Jersey Devils.
The Stars have struggled to find their form, but appeared in control early in the third period after Joel L'Esperance opened the scoring with 3:21 left in the second. Taking advantage of a Calgary turnover, the Stars raced up the ice and Joel Hanley sent a pass that L'Esperance neatly redirected for his first goal of the season.
Captain Jamie Benn doubled the Dallas lead nine seconds into the third period. Roope Hintz sent a puck to Benn in the left circle, and he buried the chance for his first goal of the season and his team's first power-play tally of the season.
Bishop made 27 saves in the loss.
