TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs have learned to play without their star center Auston Matthews for the time being.
They have won both games in the 20-year-old's absence, including a comeback 3-2 overtime decision versus the Boston Bruins on Friday night.
Patrick Marleau scored at 1:07 of overtime, redirecting a shot from the right circle by Jake Gardiner for his seventh goal of the season.
"I thought it was a good game," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "I really thought Boston did a really nice job. I didn't think there was any room. There weren't lots of plays. It was probably boring actually for the crowd, but it was good for me, I liked it that way."
It did not look good for Toronto when David Pastrnak scored on a power play in the third period to give the Bruins the 2-1 lead.
The Maple Leafs (11-7-0) tied the game with one minute left in regulation, however, on the second goal of the game by James van Riemsdyk on a deflection.
"I think all of us on the ice were just doing a good job of keeping the play alive and kept pucks alive," van Riemsdyk said. "The D up top there made some great plays to keep it in on some dirty pucks. A couple guys knocked pucks down and made it tough on them, obviously in their end a long time which makes it tough on them.
Patrice Bergeron also scored for the Bruins (6-5-4) and goaltender Anton Khudobin made 30 saves.
Goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped 33 shots for Toronto. He is 9-0-0 in his career against Boston.
"I don't know, I think that's just stuff like tonight," Andersen said. "We come out and find a way. It's not really anything I worry too much about. Obviously, it's great to win and that's what we try to do. You never know what they're going to bring but what you want is to prepare every night. I guess against Boston it's been coming out our way."
The Maple Leafs outshot the Bruins 10-8 in a drab first period.
Toronto had the only power play of the opening period and the first two power plays of the second.
"It was a hard-fought game, it was very close, tight, on both sides," Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara said. "It's a little disappointing for us to give up a goal that late but they made a good play, they had an extra player on the ice, they found him and put it in the net. I thought in the overtime we had some chances early on."
Khudobin made a big stop on Toronto's Dominic Moore at 14:28 of the second period when the center was in alone after a giveaway by Boston defenseman Paul Postma.
"They're a good team, they play a really fast game, high tempo," Bruins left winger Brad Marchand said. "We played good, a few mistakes end of costing us the game. We have to continue to tighten up. We're playing well, we're right there, so that's a plus. But we need to win games. We can't be giving up points like this."
Bergeron gave Boston a 1-0 at 15:38 of the second period with his fourth goal of the season, a snapper from the right circle on a pass from Marchand.
The Maple Leafs finally scored on their fourth power play of the game when van Riemsdyk jammed in a rebound at 19:44 of the second to tie the game at 1.
With Riley Nash serving a slashing penalty, Morgan Rielly shot from the point with Nazem Kadri and van Riemsdyk both taking swipes at the rebound before van Riemsdyk knocked it home.
Toronto had a 24-23 advantage in shots on goal after two periods and had four power plays to one for Boston.
Both teams failed on their first two power plays of the third period.
Boston had its second man advantage of the third at 12:31 when Toronto's Josh Leivo was called for hooking and Pastrnak scored his 10th goal of the season at 14:30.
With Andersen removed for an extra attacker, van Riemsdyk scored his eighth of the season to tie the game at 2 at 19:00.
