Sharks 5, Penguins 3: Captain Joe Thornton snapped a tie with 5:39 remaining in the third period as host San Jose scored four times in the session to rally past Pittsburgh.

Brent Burns recorded two goals, defenseman Justin Braun and Patrick Marleau also scored and Joe Pavelski collected three assists for the Sharks, who are 1-0-1 on their four-game homestand. Thornton added an assist and Antti Niemi turned aside 19 shots as San Jose improved to 3-0-1 in its last four at home.

Rookie defenseman Olli Maatta registered his first career two-goal performance and Chris Kunitz also tallied for the Penguins, who fell to 1-2-0 on their five-game road trip and remained winless in San Jose since October 1997. Jeff Zatkoff finished with 42 saves and captain Sidney Crosby was minus-5 for the first time in his career.

Pittsburgh built a 2-0 lead as Maatta and Kunitz scored 72 seconds apart late in the first period, with the latter cashing in on a power-play opportunity. Braun got San Jose on the board with a shot from along the right-wing boards with 2:17 remaining in the second, and Marleau beat Zatkoff with a backhander while short-handed at 5:18 of the third to forge a tie.

The Penguins quickly regained the lead as Maatta converted a cross-slot pass from Brandon Sutter during a man advantage 21 seconds later, but Burns beat Zatkoff from the right hash marks 1:13 afterward to knot it at 3-3. Thornton gave the Sharks their only lead with 5:39 remaining, crossing the blue line on the left side before unleashing a rising knuckler that fooled Zatkoff for the winning goal.
