Markell Johnson drained a half-court shot at the buzzer to give North Carolina State an 80-77 victory against host UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C.
Johnson took one dribble and let loose a shot that prevented overtime after UNCG's Isaiah Miller tied the game with a basket from the lane with 2.1 seconds to play.
Johnson, who finished with 19 points, had limped off the court a few minutes before the winning shot.
C.J. Bryce scored 17 points and Pat Andree tallied 15 points for NC State (8-2).
Miller racked up 21 of his 26 points in the second half for UNCG (8-3), which had a five-game winning streak snapped.
Kyrin Galloway's 13 points were critical for UNCG, while freshman Keyshaun Langley hit four 3-pointers in the first half and ended up with 12 points.
Greensboro Coliseum was a full roar as the Spartans stormed back from a 13-point second-half deficit and pulled within one, having two possessions with a chance to go ahead.
Bryce then beat the shot clock with a corner 3 with 3:47 to go.
Before the winning basket, Johnson's last points came on a drive to the basket for a 77-73 edge with 2:58 left before he was helped off the court.
Miller then drained two free throws at the 1:32 mark.
Johnson returned and tried to score on a drive, but the Wolfpack regained possession when the Spartans mishandled the rebound. NC State called consecutive timeouts, the latter its last with 58 seconds showing.
Johnson missed from 3, then Galloway's potential go-ahead 3 bounced away. The Spartans retained possession when the ball went out of bounds with 14 seconds left.
NC State trailed 45-41 early in the second half before making a 20-6 run defined by efficient offense. The Wolfpack made 10 of its first 13 shots in the second half.
NC State led 38-37 at halftime.
NC State forward Jericole Hellems, who was taken off the court on a stretcher Dec. 7 at Wake Forest with back and head injuries, checked in less than four minutes into the game. He played 19 minutes.
This was UNCG's first game against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since defeating NC State in December 2017 in Raleigh. That is the Spartans' lone victory in 12 all-time meetings.
