Stanford 66, Miami (Fla.) 64 (OT): Chasson Randle scored 25 points as the Cardinal prevailed over the shorthanded Hurricanes at Madison Square Garden in the NIT's first overtime championship game since 1995.
Randle made 6-of-6 free throws in overtime as second-seeded Stanford (24-13) captured its third NIT title (1991, 2012) despite shooting 0-of-5 with two turnovers in the extra session. Stefan Nastic registered 11 points and three blocks before fouling out late in regulation, while guards Anthony Brown and Marcus Allen combined for 18 points and 22 rebounds for the Cardinal.
Sheldon McClellan scored all 17 of his points after halftime to pace No. 2 seed Miami (25-13), which played without two starters - point guard Angel Rodriguez (wrist) and center Tonye Jekiri (concussion). Davon Reed added 16 points and Ja'Quan Newton notched 10 for the Hurricanes, who had a chance to win at the final buzzer, but McClellan's double-pump 3-pointer was off the mark.
McClellan drove for a slam with 2:02 left in overtime and found Reed for a backdoor layup a minute later for a 64-61 lead, but Randle made four free throws, including a pair with 3.4 seconds remaining, to put Stanford up by a point. The Hurricanes turned it over on the ensuing inbound pass and Brown made 1-of-2 free throws before a Hail Mary inbound attempt went off a Stanford player, providing Miami's last chance.
The Cardinal led by seven after Randle's 3-pointer with roughly nine minutes left in the second half, but McClellan scored four straight points to ignite a 10-3 run that drew Miami even at 53 with 3:27 left. Randle made go-ahead layups through traffic twice in the final two minutes of regulation, although McClellan answered with two foul shots each time before Allen's 3-pointer hit off the front rim at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Randle, who became Stanford's all-time scoring leader in Tuesday's semifinal win over Old Dominion, finished his four-year career with 2,375 points, leading the team to NIT titles as a freshman and a senior. ... Stanford dominated the final 5:45 of the first half, outscoring Miami 14-3 with the help of two 3-pointers by Randle to carry a 32-21 lead into halftime. Randle led all scorers with 13 first-half points. ... Reed added five rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks for the Hurricanes, who had never reached the NIT Final Four in 11 previous appearances at the event.
