Arizona State 96, Maryland-Baltimore County 61: Jahii Carson and backcourt mate Jermaine Marshall scored 19 points apiece as the host Wildcats pulled away midway through the second half.
Jordan Bachynski added 12 points and 15 rebounds, Shaquielle McKissic scored 11 and Jonathan Gilling had 10 for Arizona State (1-0).
Malik Garner and Rodney Elliott scored 12 points each to lead the Retrievers (0-1).
UMBC trailed by just three points with about eight minutes left in the first half, but a dunk by Bachynski capped a 14-2 run and put the Wildcats ahead 37-22 with 4:29 remaining in the first half.
Garner scores six straight points for the Retrievers coming out of the half, but Arizona State sank back-to-back 3-pointers to extend its lead back to 54-35. A 7-0 run by UMBC cut the deficit to 60-49 midway through second half, but Arizona State answered with a 13-0 run of its own to move back ahead 73-49
GAME NOTEBOOK: Both teams combined for 20 fouls in the first half and had 30 through the first 30 minutes. … Nov. 8 was the earliest season opener in Arizona State history. … The Retrievers, who shot 62.7 percent from the free-throw line last season, 331st in the nation, finished 11-for-25 from the line.
