Delaware 59, Virginia 53: Devon Saddler scored a team-high 15 points as the visiting Blue Hens blew an 18-point second-half lead before upending the host Cavaliers and advance in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Delaware (2-1) advanced to play the winner of Kansas State/Alabama-Huntsville in the semifinals on Nov. 21 at Madison Square Garden. Saddler went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Virginia (1-2), which used a 25-4 run to erase the 18-point deficit, pulled within 56-53 on Joe Harris’ 3-pointer with 15 seconds to go. Saddler was fouled and hit two free throws to seal the victory.
The Cavaliers trailed 35-17 three minutes into the second half, but clawed back as Darion Atkins scored 10 points during the run and Evan Nolte’s 3-pointer with 7:58 remaining pushed Virginia ahead 42-41.
Harris led the Cavaliers with 20 points. Akil Mitchell added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Delaware led for most of the first half, using a 9-2 run to build a 28-15 halftime advantage on Jamelle Hagins’ layup just before time expired. Hagins finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds. … Virginia shot just 35.1 percent from the field. … Delaware finished 14-of-17 on free throws.
