Cubs 6, Marlins 1: Jake Arrieta struck out a career-high 11 in seven strong innings and Nate Schierholtz homered as visiting Chicago took the rubber match of a three-game series from Miami.
Starlin Castro delivered a pair of RBI doubles and Anthony Rizzo doubled among three hits for the Cubs. Arrieta (3-1) struck out at least two batters in the second, third, fourth and fifth while surrendering one run and five hits.
Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton hit his 20th home run in the first inning but was removed in the seventh with a wrist injury. Nathan Eovaldi (4-3) was charged with five runs on nine hits in six innings to run his winless streak to four straight starts.
Chicago struck in the first inning when former Marlin Chris Coghlan doubled to right, moved up on a flyout and came in on Castro’s double to left. Miami got that run right back in the bottom of the frame, when Stanton got a 2-1 slider over the middle of the plate and drove it the opposite way into the front row in right.
It stayed knotted until the sixth, when Rizzo started the four-run rally with a single to right and scored on Castro’s double to the wall in right-center. Ryan Sweeney followed with a single and Schierholtz capped the uprising by ripping a slider off the facing of the second deck in right.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arrieta has allowed one or no earned runs in six of his last seven outings, dropping his ERA to 1.98. … Marlins RHP Jacob Turner made his second career relief appearance and yielded a run on four hits in two innings. … Stanton is listed as day-to-day as Miami continues its homestand against the New York Mets on Thursday. The Cubs get the day off before returning home to host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.
