Rangers 5, Canadiens 0: Henrik Lundqvist extended his franchise record with his 54th career shutout and Martin St. Louis collected a goal and an assist as host New York breezed past Montreal.
Lundqvist made 21 saves and absorbed an open-ice collision from Brandon Prust early in the third period, prompting defenseman Kevin Klein to take issue and drop the gloves with the former Ranger. The Swedish Olympian goaltender wasn't fazed by the altercation and preserved his fourth shutout of the season by stopping all five shots in the third.
Dominic Moore scored for the first time since his Game 6 winner versus the Canadiens in last season's Eastern Conference final. Rick Nash netted his team-leading 14th goal and Derek Stepan and Carl Hagelin also tallied for New York, which recorded its second consecutive shutout and improved to 3-1-2 in its last six contests.
Moore cleaned up a loose puck in front to open the scoring midway through the first period before the Rangers doubled their advantage 35 seconds into the middle session. St. Louis' backhanded pass from along the right-wing boards connected to the edge of the left circle for Stepan, who beat Dustin Tokarski (29 saves) for his second goal.
St. Louis' brilliant individual effort helped New York secure a 3-0 lead at 15:33 of the second. The veteran deftly lifted the stick of Montreal defenseman Alexei Emelin to steal the puck before skating in and wristing a shot under the crossbar for his eighth goal - and seventh in 10 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York, which posted a 2-0 victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday, recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2003 season. ... Hagelin scored from the doorstep 1:40 into the third period before Nash's backhand shot on a breakaway capped the scoring at 15:24. ... New York's Chris Kreider notched two assists, fellow LW Tanner Glass set up a goal for his first point of the season and RW Jesper Fast also had an assist for his first career NHL point.
